How to clean a hot tub

Having a hot tub is a relaxing and wonderful luxury. Maintaining that same hot tub isn't quite as wonderful, but it doesn't have to be stressful and demanding. Regular maintenance will help ensure that your hot tub provides you with the therapeutic relaxation you need. Don't neglect the proper cleaning and maintenance of your hot tub. You will be less likely to use your hot tub regularly if it's not ready to go.

In addition to the regular chemical maintenance needed, you will want to drain and clean hot tub aprroximately every 3 months. First, drain the tub of all water. Wipe down the shell with a mild cleanser and clean cloth or damp sponge. Rinse the shell well and refill with clean water. Be sure to follow up with your regular chemical routine.

Some cleansers that you may consider using are diluted vinegar, baking soda, rubbing alcohol, diluted bleach (if you use chlorine in your tub), the cleaning product Simple Green, 409 or Windex, Magic Eraser for those stubborn spots, and the hot tub cleaner recommended by the hot tub company or local dealer.

Do not use anything abrasive or corrosive that can damage the surface of the shell. You need not just clean the shell of the hot tub, but you must also keep the filter clean so it can work properly. Clean the hot tub filter monthly. First remove the filter according the recommended instructions. Lay the filter down and spray with hose to remove any dirt of debris lodge in there. Fill a bucket with water and some mild cleanser or spa filter cleaner. Allow the filter to soak a while to remove more dirt. When you remove the filter from the bucket, spray it again with the hose and replace the filter properly.

You will want to clean the hot tub cover monthly or as needed depending on the location of your hot tub. You will need to spray the hot tub cover with a hose to keep it clean. If dirt or sap remain after a good rinsing off, use a mild cleanser and damp sponge to clean the cover. Also, be sure to spray off the underside of the cover as well. No cleansers should be needed for the underneath.

Don't forget the plumbing components of your hot tub. Cleaning out the plumbing conduits of the hot tub will help you maintain a safe, healthy hot tub environment where you are able to relax. You will need to flush the lines. This is done with a full tub, so it is recommended to do before you empty the tub to clean it.
